The history of post in Kurdistan

Although the establishment of the Transportation and Communication Ministry in the first KRG cabinet was at a very turbulent time, the Ministry attempted to keep postal services active and alive. From then until (2003) posts were sent and received through Turkey.
From (2003) postal exchanges with other counties were going through Baghdad. But this had many problems especially delay in postal delivery.
After many attempts by the Ministry of Communication, in cooperation with the International Postal Union, an international centre for postal exchange was opened, with its own logo. This is the first time ever in the history of postal services that a region is given a special logo because only members of the United Nations can be granted membership of the Postal Union. The office of this centre is now operating and Kurdish posts can be directly exchanged through the airports with many countries, particularly Jordan. The speed, reliability and cost efficiency of this service attracts customers and the public trust the service.
It is worth mention that Iraqi stamps are still used for international postal and packaging services and the Kurdistan Regional Government’s stamps for internal services. The Directorate of Postal Services is composed of the following department:
Directorate of Hawlet Post Office is composed of (18) offices, one in each district and subdistrict in addition to a post office in the Hawler International Airport. Duhok Post offices (15) offices.
Sulaimaniyah Post offices (22) offices.
In addition to the public postal services, there are many private firms working in the area of postal services.
